How AI is Changing The Way People Shop What Your Store Should Know
The way consumers discover and purchase products online is changing rapidly. And if you run an ecommerce store, this is one thing that you really cannot afford to miss.
We’re not talking about a minor tweak to Google’s algorithm. It’s a whole new world of shopping.
AI tools like ChatGPT, Gemini, and Perplexity aren’t just answering questions anymore, they’re recommending products and completing purchases inside the conversation. If your store isn’t optimized for AI, it simply won’t show up.
An AI-driven Commerce What does this mean for Ecommerce businesses?
The personal approach of personalization that we know today will need to evolve beyond the old ways of SEO. Implementing Agentic Commerce, AEO (AI Engine Optimization) and GEO (Generative Engine Optimization) has now become essential to stay competitive for visibility.
So What’s Actually Changing?
You know those times when you would Google something, see a list of links, and click through to find what you need? That’s still happening but AI tools like ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity are doing something more now.
Rather than present links, they simply… answer. You say something like, “can you recommend a good eco-friendly yoga mat under $50? ” and the AI gives you top affordable picks under $50.
(And right there in the chat, a direct recommendation.) No links to click, no sites to browse and no pages to scroll through.
And here’s the crazy thing: people are believing these answers. A lot.
So if your brand is not appearing in those A.I.-generated answers, you are essentially invisible to an expanding slice of shoppers.
Now It’s Getting Even Bigger: Meet Agentic Commerce

Now AI recommending products is one thing. But it is going even further than that.
Shopify is now developing something called Agentic Commerce. It’s where AI doesn’t just suggest products, it does the whole shopping for you.
Here’s how it works: A shopper tells their AI assistant something like “find me a 14-piece cookware set under $150 that can be delivered within 3 days. Then the AI tool searches across stores, compares options, and checks out all on its own. The shopper need not go to a single website.
Wild, right?
This is powered by three core tools that Shopify has developed:
- A product catalog that indexes millions of Shopify stores
- A universal shopping cart that can contain goods from several stores at once
- A checkout kit that processes secure payment through Shop Pay
That’s A Gang Big Deal The Universal Commerce Protocol
The other is a joint venture from Shopify and Google, who co-created something called the Universal Commerce Protocol (UCP), a kind of shared language that allows AI agents to shop across any storefront on any platform.
What this makes possible in practice: your products can now appear and be purchased directly inside ChatGPT, Google Gemini, and Microsoft Copilot. This way, the customer does not have to exit the conversation in order to purchase your service.
And here’s the best part: don’t even have to be on there
So, What Should I Do Now?
Great question. The stores that will win in this new era are the ones that make it simple for AI to read us. And that all boils down to a single thing: your data.
AI tools get their answers from two places: their own training data (meaning everything they’ve ever learned) and live sources on the web that they trust.
If your brand is mentioned in those trusted sources think review sites, community hubs, publications, knowledge graphs the AI will be much more likely to cite you in its answers.
-
- Include detailed, fact-heavy product pages dimensions, materials, certifications, everything. AI loves facts. If your product pages are confusing and incomplete, or worse yet messy, then AI simply can’t recommend you. It will jump on to a competitor whose store it can easily parse and understand.
- Be featured on reputable print publications, websites, roundups, niche review sites.
- Building true brand authority reviews, community mentions or press coverage
- SEO may be old hat, but it applies here too. If you do well on Google, you’re more present in the sources A.I. draws on. It’s all connected.
- Implement codes for, AEO (AI Engine Optimization) and GEO (Generative Engine Optimization) on your site. We are here to help you with that.
